Hi Michael Thanks for your message on the talkpage of Mutated learning object. The problem is twofold:

While I totally believe that you are Michael Shaw, own the copyright and can give permission for it to be used on Wikipedia, on the internet nobody can know for sure that people are who they say they are. For this reason, you need to follow the instructions above to confirm that you are the copyright holder and you give permission.

Secondly, you need to look into GFDL and understand that you are not just giving approval for your text to be used on Wikipedia. You need to release under GFDL so that it can be used anywhere, including for commercial purposes.

Hiya,

Very interesting. I suppose I could just delete the original article from my server and then there would be no copyright issue. Although I have perused the legal jargon, I do not fully understand what is specifically required of me to release this research/information. Do you have an easy fix/solution?

Hi Mike, Thanks for your generous response to all these difficulties! I have moved your message here to keep a record of things, and removed some personal information which shouldn't be lingering too publicly on the internet. While I cannot claim to be an expert on this, my understanding is that you need to do one of two things:

Send an e-mail from a shawmultimedia address to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a letter to Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and say that you have done so at Talk page... Or

Put a note at the bottom (or top!) of the article on your server releasing the work under the GFDL and then say that you have done this at the Talk page.

I think that the second way might be easiest and clearest, myself but it is up to you!
By the way, you also have to be prepared for the fact that people will edit what you contribute, so it may be very different after a few weeks, months and years! Hi Mike, Thanks for working through this and I am glad you see it as a valuable experience! I can't see the release at [1] yet, but I guess there may be a delay in these things. I will remove the speedy tag and check back at some point to make sure the permission is on the original article for sure. If there is a problem I will get back to you. Due to the free-flinging use of the term 'learning object' in the fast-paced domain of e-learning, academic and industry input is much needed to move these types of required definitions forward. It is refreshing to know that the Wikipedia community is open-minded enough to do just that - after all, that's what this technology is all about... not waiting a decade or so for traditional knowledge providers/publishers to catch-up with the real world! OK. Don't be alarmed at the number of tags appearing at the top of the article, requesting improvements. These tags have two purposes: to remind the author(s) of the article of necessary improvements, and to automatically add the article to categories that may attract others to help out. I personally don't know enough about the subject to edit the content. Right now the article really needs a lead-in paragraph. =Axlq 05:05, 9 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
