I'm studying the CCNP BCMSN course and LWAPP is not the control protocol it is a tunneling method/protocol to allow the LAP's to connect to the WLC's. The Cisco Wireless Control System (WCS) is the name of the server application presenting a GUI to cover the functions mentioned in this article.

Well, I'm currently not studying CCNP, but I was currently sniffing the traffic, between APs and WLC, and while it also provides the tunneling as you said, it is also used to control the APs.
