"Kangaroo" vs. "candiru"

@Rich Farmbrough: Is it necessary to distinguish the word "kangaroo" from "candiru" in this article? These words rhyme, but they are pronounced very differently and not likely to be confused. Jarble (talk) 21:41, 8 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

They are pronounced similarly enough for me to mishear it as "kangaroo fish", according to Wiktionary the only difference is the hard consonant and syllable boundary /ˌkændɪˈɹuː/ /ˌkæŋ.ɡəˈɹuː/ - the apocryphal version of the fish is a jumping fish, so there is also potential priming to hear "kangaroo". Obviously speaker's pronunciation and hearer's interpretation vary substantially, but I think it's a worthwhile hat note. I will not be offended (or even know) if you remove it, however.
