The National Science Foundation report, Visualization in Scientific Computing, is generally credited with launching the field of scientific visualization in 1987. And 27 years ago, in 1994, Larry Rosenblum edited a special issue of IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications on Research Issues in Scientific Visualization, focusing on then-recent advances and emerging topics in visualization.

One of the first groups on computer graphics and interactive techniques was founded in 1969 in the USA by ACM and hosts an annual international conference (with the first one in 1974). .... In the past, applications have not received much attention because the conference is driven primarily by academic researchers in universities and research laboratories. Application papers are published in IEEE Computer Graphics & Applications.
