Earlier HALs

Didn't Windows (and probably some other operating systems) have a HAL before this thing, even if it did the same thing? --CCFreak2K 09:28, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Windows NT - and other operating systems - have hardware abstraction layers, but they don't do the same thing as the freedesktop.org HAL; they exist at a much lower layer. The name chosen by freedesktop.org can be a bit confusing, for that reason. Guy Harris 17:53, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Can someone clarify the difference between e.g. Windows NT HAL and freedesktop.org HAL?

I mean, in the article, not here. NuclearWinner 16:30, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Quirk

What is a HAL quirk ?. --Mac (talk) 07:16, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

HAL and DeviceKit

DeviceKit isn't the replacement of HAL, HAL will be replaced by udev (lib udev and gudev) http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.hotplug.devel

(DK-disks, DK-power, still remain.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Boulabiar (talkcontribs) 01:45, 11 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bias

The whole world is not Lignux. Hal is not "being replaced by udev" on non-Lignux systems, since there is no such thing as "udev" on non-Lignux systems. 121a0012 (talk) 17:31, 4 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, since at least one non-"Lignux" OS still relies on HAL, I agree the article is biased. It cannot be said "HAL was..." nor can it be declared "obsolete". I'm tagging this article as biased, this should be discussed further... Arny (talk) 13:10, 19 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes, this software is still alive, as alive as Larry King. Give it a week or two. History2007 (talk) 23:00, 7 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've boldly removed the tag. If you want to expand on other OS'es using HAL, please feel free to improve the article. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 08:55, 29 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Poettering

It should be mentioned that this is yet another piece that was pushed into many distros and then deprecated, resulting in a lot of fuzz for very very little actual benefit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:A60:1688:EC01:1D10:1185:936B:CEFF (talk) 13:29, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Article misses origins

The article gives no details on the early history of HAL. Who made it and where and when? 2601:142:8200:AAD8:3DCE:B7CE:A260:F4FA (talk) 03:25, 19 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Needs updating, badly

"In Linux, it is in the process of being merged into udev"

That has long since passed. But nobody thought of changing it. Sweet. jae (talk) 15:12, 24 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
