Is the 100% frequency more like an ideal assumption, or is it assumed to be really true somehow? Because, with the enormous number of births at each generation, is it really likely that every single locus that had no multiple alelles until then, can safely be considered free of new mutants? --Extremophile 14:19, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

NO, the 100% frequency is not an assumption, but YES, new mutations (polymorphisms) do indeed arise at "fixed" loci. The value is the frequency at equilibrium, with any difference from 100% being negligible. Note that this page should be replaced by Fixation_(population_genetics).
