Is it right to think that the sense of 'formal' in 'formal sum' is that the elements are brought together with + but without a requirement that the operation produces a new elements? So a and b in a + b remain distinct and don't have to be reducible (or perhaps can't be reduced) to a single element. Starple (talk) 21:48, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
