Breed "extinction"

Multiple Wikipedia articles about animal breeds refer to extinction, near extinction etc, of that specific BREED rather than its species (eg, Shar Pei breed vs Canis familiaris). Is this use of the term extinction recognised by science, or is it a casual use of the word that stretches its meaning beyond formal definition? ~2026-26859-89 (talk) 02:35, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I found List of extinct dog breeds. Wikt:extinct uses a quote about breeds as well. Wikt:extinction does not appear to be a "casual" word nor exclusively refer to biological taxa. WeyerStudentOfAgrippa (talk) 22:50, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
