What about Malta?

The country of Malta does not seem to be included in the map File:Europe and the European Union.svg. Pasquale (talk) 17:45, 13 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Malta is in that image and green, although very small. CMD (talk) 06:19, 15 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Map error

The map in the Agriculture and fisheries subsection showing the EU's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) is in error. I have described the problem at Commons:File talk:European Union Exclusive Economic Zones.PNG#Colour key confusion. Spideog (talk) 18:54, 26 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Short description

There is a rather silly edit war going on over the wp:short description for this article.

  • The belief that its length should be not be more than 40 characters is mistaken: WP:SDSHORT advises on length and nowhere does it say any such thing. (About ten years ago, there was a rule to that effect because of a design error in the app for early iPhones. The most recent discussion about brevity is at Wikipedia talk:Short description#60 character limit, which reaffirmed that it no longer obtains.)
  • The first two sentences of the article give the three most descriptive characteristics of the EU: that it is a supranational, political and economic union. The US is a political and economic union of states but it is not supranational – states' rights are limited by the constitution – whereas Subsidiarity (European Union) is far stronger in that the Union has no powers other than those delegated to it by the member states. The UN is supranational to a degree (acceptance of UN conventions) but it certainly not a political or economic union. It is misleading to readers to leave out any of these three.

HOWTOSD says "concentrate on the purpose of the short description: to complement the title with additional useful information in such a way that a user who sees the two together can easily tell what the article is about". So it should be not mislead, which is what omitting any one of these three words would do. I have yet to see an edit summary that presents a reasoned objection to Supranational political and economic union. So let's see it. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 16:52, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

As none of the editors who were so quick to truncate the SD have responded to this invitation to justify a truncated SD, I have reinstated Supranational political and economic union. It is now a scary 43 characters long and the sky has not fallen in. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 21:28, 20 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Good, I agree. Everlasting 0 (talk) 08:44, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Cyrillic isn't an EU language

Where is the proof? No source. The EU doesn't have this. ~2026-30120-05 (talk) 06:40, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Cyrillic is a writing system, not a language. You can see its official use in the infobox. CMD (talk) 08:31, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
... and if you want to see some evidence for very little effort effort, look at any euro banknote. It includes "ЕВРО", which is the Bulgarian Cyrillic spelling for EURO, as well as the abbreviation "ЕЦБ" (short for Европейска централна банка in Bulgarian). 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 08:44, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
