Data governance vs. document control

How does data governance compare to the old corporate department of "document control"?

Many of the principles of document control seem to be common with data governance. Is data governance an evolution of document control?

Data ownership and accountability

Data Ownership and accountability (specifically at the exec level) needs to be added - as you can't govern what you don't own. Adrian Kearns (talk) 00:39, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Why governance?

Why is this in a series on governance? Other than having the term in the title, it doesn't seem to be conceptually linked to the other pages in the series. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 23.24.203.41 (talk) 00:59, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Split proposal

I think that the distinction between a 'macro' definition of Data Governance and 'micro' definition would best be served by a content split and disambiguation, the two definitions are conceptually quite different. As a Data Management Professional who also has worked in public statistics, I would like to propose splitting the article into; Data Governance (Data Management) and Data Governance (Statistics).Duncnbiscuit (talk) 01:20, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

As I understand it, 'Data Governance' are the concepts related to the overall compliance framework: roles and responsibilities, policies, legislation, principles etc. `Data Management` is the practical act of administration and best practices required to comply with that governance framework. That differentiation holds true whether the context is international, national, or within an individual organisation. I don't see the need for the split at present, could you point me in the direction of some 'Statistics' focused Data governance references? SallyRenee (talk) 01:06, 29 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Clerical note: I am not taking a position on the split discussion itself, but if consensus does reflect a decision in favor of splitting, the article titles should be Data governance (data management) and Data governance (statistics). See WP:LOWERCASE. I have edited the proposal accordingly. Again, this change should not be construed as an argument supporting, nor opposing, any particular split/restructuring/etc.
