Group of schemes?

WRT "Base64 is a group of binary-to-text encoding schemes" in what sense is it a 'group'. It seems like one thing to me. If we're going to say it's a group we need to say what that means. What are the items in the group? Further, the rest of the article talks about a single thing so I think it is not a group of things.

Maybe saying 'group' is due to the variations ... variations that use different codepoints (is that the right word?) If so, then I understand the intent. But the wording is awkward. Rather than saying it's a group, let's say it has variations. For example: Base64 is blah blah ... Relatively minor variations exist that use different sets of characters. I re-worked the intro to read better but still cover what I assume it meant by 'group'. Stevebroshar (talk) 19:19, 27 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Tables :(

As so many articles do, this has a large and confusing table. Many actually. But this is about the one that lists (some of) the variants. What does the lines column with sub-columns separators length checksum mean? We can't just throw a column in a table and expect people to know what it means. I assume length is a max line length so should be labeled like: max length. What do the separators and checksum cols mean? ... And rather than explaining the columns let's just remove them. Tables are almost always the wrong answer. Stevebroshar (talk) 18:14, 25 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
