Doesn't the Software Update screen look a little dated? It appears to be a screenshot with an OSX custom theme (UNO) installed. Can soeone post a screnshot in it's orginal OSX glroy?

"Software update" is a generic term for a file, code, procedure, etc., that upgrades a previous version, release, "patch," or other instance of software to a newer form.

I don't see why this should be a separate article regarding Apple's particular way of implementing this. At most there should be a disambiguation with a link to Apple Software Updates.

The current "patch" article is inadequate to the purpose because patches are only one form of update.

Should there be a more general page for the definition if general software updates? I vote we move this page to Software Update(Apple). So that we can provide the more broad definition. Afterall, Apply may make a great product but they aren't the only onesto utilize software updates =) We could even make a discombobulation page.

Aye; I was going to propose the same change. Yes, the name of Apple's product is "Software Update", but it's not clearly descriptive. Windows computers also have A.S.U.s if they have Apple software installed on them; that's as much as I really know regarding that. Would anyone else have more detail regarding A.S.U. on Windows, such as when it started and how it's different than on a Mac? --DanMat6288 (talk) 23:01, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

There was some controversy over Apple's placement of new software such as QuickTime, etc. as "Updates" in the tool in 2008; see e.g. the CNet News Blog or Google results. "Apple Software Update has been criticized for automatically installing new software on Windows when checking for updates. On March 18, 2008 Apple started offering the Safari web browser for download through Software Update. Windows users well know c't Offline Update for Windows, now named WSUS Offline Update. c't also made an Offline Update for OS X. http://www.heise.de/software/download/ct_offline_update_fuer_mac_os_x_10.4_oliu/43654 It appears to have never been updated since its initial release and only supports OS X 10.4 Tiger. The source code can be downloaded so it would be possible for someone else to update it to cover Leopard and Snow Leopard. Bizzybody (talk) 01:36, 14 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
