President of lingnan university
Professor S. Joe Qin (Chinese: 秦泗釗) currently holds the position of Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science[1] and serves as the President of Lingnan University in Hong Kong.[2]
Career
From 1992 to 1995, Professor Qin contributed significantly as a Principal Engineer at Emerson Process Management. He subsequently advanced his career in academia, holding positions as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor, and was honored to have the distinguished Paul D. and Betty Robertson Meek and American Petrofina Foundation Centennial Professorship in Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin from 1995 to 2007.[3]
Following this, he assumed the role of Fluor Professor at the Viterbi School of Engineering at the University of Southern California[4] (USC), where he dedicated his expertise from 2007 to 2019. Notably, during his tenure at USC, Professor Qin undertook a crucial three-year leave to serve as Vice President and Presidential Chair Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.[5]
Most recently, from January 2020 to June 2023, he contributed significantly to the academic landscape in Hong Kong as the inaugural Dean of the School of Data Science and the Chair Professor of Data Science at the City University of Hong Kong.[6]
Education
Professor Qin possesses a diverse educational background encompassing multiple disciplines. He obtained his B.S. and M.S. in Automatic Control from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, in 1984 and 1987 respectively.[6] He further studied and graduated with Ph.D. in Automation at same university, in 1989.[7] In 1989, Qin moved to the United States to pursue a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering at the University of Maryland, and completed his education in June 1992.[8]

In 2022, Professor Qin was honored with the CAST Computing in Chemical Engineering Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE)[14] and the IEEE CSS Transition to Practice Award.[15] Notably, he is the first and only Greater China recipient to receive both accolades. Earlier in his career, he received several distinguished awards, including:

His research interests encompass diverse areas such as data science and analytics, machine learning, process monitoring, model predictive control, system identification, smart manufacturing, smart cities, and predictive health maintenance.
