2000 census

As of the census^[4] of 2000, there were 1,038 people, 397 households, and 258 families residing in the town. The population density was 452.6 inhabitants per square mile (174.7/km²). There were 497 housing units at an average density of 216.7 per square mile (83.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 76.01% White, 21.19% African American, 0.67% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.48% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.96% of the population.

There were 397 households, out of which 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.6% were married couples living together, 18.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% were non-families. 32.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.04.
