New YorkU.S. state located on the Eastern seaboard and extending to the Great Lakes. Settled by the Dutch in the 17th century, New York was one of the original Thirteen Colonies. About one third of all the battles of the Revolutionary War took place in New York. New York enacted its constitution in 1777 and was the eleventh state to ratify the United States Constitution, on July 26, 1788. It is the fourth most populous state.
