Maria Bobbitt-Chertock, who performs under the stage name Maria BC, is an American ambient musician and singer born in Cincinnati, Ohio,[2] who is currently based in Oakland, California.[3]
History
Maria BC was trained growing up as a mezzo-soprano. Their father was a musician in the local church.[4] Bobbit-Chertock graduated from Middlebury College in 2019 and moved to New York City to begin a music career in February 2020.[5] Maria BC released their debut EP, Devil's Rain, in 2021.[4] The title track received praise from Pitchfork.[6] Maria BC announced their debut album, Hyaline, in early 2022.[7] The album was released on May 27 of that year through Father/Daughter Records.[8] The album was named one of Pitchfork's "7 New Albums You Should Listen to Now" upon release.,[9] as well as "Album of the Week" from Stereogum.[10] Following the release of this album, Maria BC released a Hyaline remix album in November 2022.[11] Maria BC also performed at South by Southwest in 2022.[5]
In 2023, Maria BC announced that they had signed to Sacred Bones Records.[12] In addition to the signing, Maria BC announced their second full-length album, titled Spike Field.[13] Two songs were released alongside the album announcement, "Amber" and "Watcher".[14]
In addition to their solo music, Maria BC has also collaborated with Rachika Nayar, featuring on two tracks from her debut album, as well as performing in the artist's touring band.[15][16]
