It was described as "A story of domestic conflict in a country setting. Told with quiet, but compelling power in the manner of Daphne du Maurier."^[2]

The novel was serialised in the Sydney Morning Herald.^[3][4][5]

The Argus said "would be better if some of the propaganda were more subtle."^[6]

The Weekly Times said Craig's "style is impressive and she writes convincingly about country scenes with which she is familiar."^[7]

The Age said "This book makes entertaining reading, although it is written fulsomely, with some characters trite and others unconvincing."^[8]

Radio adaptation

The novel was turned into a radio serial by the ABC in 1949.^[9][10]
