Hotel Abkhazia was a hotel in Sukhumi in Soviet times. It was built in 1930s and worked until it burned down in 1985. The hotel was one of the city's most prominent hotels.[2] The lot with the remains of the hotel and other buildings was bought in 2008 by an investor who undertook to restore the hotel. As of 2018 it is still not operational.[3]

Having unilaterally declared independence from Georgia in 1992, Abkhazia is formally recognised as an independent state by 5 UN member states (two other states previously recognised it but then withdrew their recognition), while the remainder of the international community recognizes it as de jure Georgian territory. Georgia continues to claim the area as its own territory, designating it as Russian-occupied territory.
