Yitzhak Azran (born December 25, 1940, in Morocco) is a retired Israeli firefighting officer who served as commander of the Eastern Galilee and Golan Municipal Association for Fire Services for nearly two decades. He is considered one of the central figures in shaping fire services in northern Israel during the 1970s and 1980s.
Biography
Early Life and Immigration to Israel
Yitzhak Azran was born on December 25, 1940, in Morocco, as the youngest child in his family. In the 1950s, he immigrated with his family to Israel as part of the large waves of immigration from Morocco, which transformed the face of Israeli society.
Career in Fire Services
At a very young age, Azran began his career in Israeli fire and rescue services. He rose through the ranks until he reached the rank of Tapsar – a senior officer rank in the Israeli Fire Service. In the late 1970s, Azran was appointed commander of the Eastern Galilee and Golan Municipal Association for Fire Services, a position he held until his retirement in 1987. The association, which coordinated firefighting activities in the Eastern Galilee and Golan Heights regions, included representatives of many local authorities, among them Hatzor HaGlilit, Safed, Katzrin, and regional councils such as Merom HaGalil, Upper Galilee, and Golan.
Development of Fire Services in the Region
Under Azran's command, the deployment of fire services in the Eastern Galilee and Golan region was expanded. He led the strengthening of the central station in Hatzor HaGlilit and the establishment of additional launch points to serve the remote communities of the Golan Heights and Upper Galilee. Azran established cooperation between the various local authorities within the association, during a period when resources were very limited.
First Lebanon War
During the First Lebanon War (1982), Azran served in a central role in commanding firefighting forces. This period is considered the greatest test of his command: firefighting forces operated under Katyusha rocket fire in Upper Galilee and the Golan Heights, handling hundreds of fires that broke out as a result of shelling in agricultural areas, forests, and within communities.
Establishment of Katzrin Station
As part of consolidating settlement on the Golan Heights following the enactment of the Golan Heights Law (1981), Azran led the establishment of professional firefighting infrastructure in Katzrin, which until then had been based mainly on volunteers and military equipment.
Forest Fires
The 1980s were marked by hot summers that led to massive fires in the forests of Biriya and the Naftali Mountains. Azran developed joint working methods with the Jewish National Fund (JNF) and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for rapidly extinguishing large areas.
After Retirement
Following his retirement in 1987, Azran continued to be active in assisting various organizations and advising on relevant projects in the field of firefighting and rescue. He enjoys quality time with his family and friends.
