Wordy is a language learning mobile app developed by Hungarian developer Sándor Bogyó. The app teaches languages by having users watch short clips from real films and TV shows and learn words in context.[1][2][3][4] It supports more than 20 languages and is available on iOS, Android and as a Chrome browser extension.[5][6][4]
Wordy was created by Sándor Bogyó, who developed the app out of frustration with repeatedly pausing English-language films and series to look up unfamiliar words.[1][2][4] Bogyó initially planned an interactive subtitle tool aimed at intermediate and advanced learners, which grew into a product that also targets beginners.[3] The project began as an entry for a startup competition before developing into a standalone product.[1][4]
The app launched on iOS in September 2024 and was covered by TechCrunch.[2] Working as a one-person company, Bogyó built the Android version himself, completing it in about a week and a half.[3] He has developed Wordy largely with the help of artificial intelligence and has said he intends to add a grammar course.[3][4]
In October 2025, after reaching the final three, Wordy won the 10 million HUF grand prize of the OTP Junior Piacralépők, a televised business competition for young entrepreneurs organised by OTP Bank.[7][8][4] In 2025, Bogyó also took part in Y Combinator's AI Startup School.[9]
By 2026, Wordy had been downloaded more than 300,000 times across over 100 countries and held a 4.8-star rating based on more than 13,000 reviews.[1][4]
Wordy offers a library of more than 15,000 short clips, each a few minutes long, drawn from popular films and TV shows.[1][3] The app guides users along a structured path from beginner to advanced level: each new word is presented through two or three short clips in which actors use it in a real situation, followed by quick exercises such as matching, selection and spelling to reinforce it.[4] Tapped words are collected into a list and categorised by difficulty, and a separate mode lets users practise saved or frequently used words and phrases.[3][5][4] The app provides roughly 9,000 words per language across the CEFR A1–C2 levels, organised into 28 thematic categories such as travel, food, emotions and work.[1][3][4]
A streaming mode lets users follow interactive subtitles on their phone in sync with films or series watched on an external service; the app highlights unfamiliar words, shows their meaning, and saves them for later practice.[1][3] Wordy is offered under a freemium model, with the free version limiting daily use and a paid subscription removing the limit.[4]
Apple included Wordy in its Apps We Love selection, and the app was covered by TechCrunch.[1][4][2] As of November 2025, it held a 4.8-star rating on both the App Store and Google Play, ranking among the most popular education apps on each platform.[3]
