During the Edwardian period Long published two writers, Hubert Wales and Victoria Cross (both pseudonyms), whose greatest success came with novels about older women who seduce young men...[2]

The novel was found to be "libelous and obscene" and suppressed. It was in the 1945 British Library's Suppressed Safe collection, later, transferred to the Private Case[8]

"Hubert Wales, a pseudonym of William Charter Pigott, was born on 10 August 1870 in Brigg, North Lincolnshire, England. After studying at the Oundle School and the Harrow School, he graduated in law and began practicing as a lawyer in 1894. Soon, however, he abandoned law to devote himself to literature, becoming a prolific and recognized writer. His narrative work is distinguished by the interest in the then controversial issues of marriage, sexual morality, the condition of women, the conflict between individual desire and social conventions...Hubert Wales died on 5 July 1943"
"He married Beatrice MacFarlane in 1895; he was widowed in 1923 and in 1932 married Dora Drinan. Many of his novels reflected his interest in the invisible and the occult; he was an active member of the Society for Psychical Research. But even more interesting are the novels that deal in an unusual and bold way with the marriage problem and the position of the woman in the relationship between the sexes....It says a lot about the seriousness with which Wales took himself, and which seems to have surrounded the whole question of the “marital problem”, the fact that he also published a book of essays, The Purpose: Reflections and Digressions (1913); among these essays we find the titles “On thought”, “On being”, “On death” and (inevitably) “On sex”. The following quote gives an idea of the latter: “For my part, I dare to say nothing but this: love is such an immense claim that, if it is reciprocal and complete, other interests can be placed quietly in the second order. It should have, I think, something similar to the privilege of fire engines to put out fires: other vehicles should approach her approach to let them pass, and the normal rules of the road should be suspended.”"
