West Java, also referred to as Greater West Java or Old West Java, was a province in Indonesia formed in 14 July 1950 by Law No. 11 of 1950 with Bandung as its capital. The province's territory includes the current provinces of West Java (1950-2000), Banten (1950-2000), and the autonomous city of Jakarta (1950-1961). The culture of this province is very diverse with the Bantenese people inhabiting the western region of this province, the Baduy people inhabiting the interior of Lebak, the Betawi people inhabiting the area around Greater Jakarta, and the Sundanese people inhabiting the eastern and northern regions of this province.

Creation of West Java (1945-1950, 1950-present)

At the beginning of the founding of the Republic of Indonesia, West Java was one of the eight original provinces formed during the independence era through the PPKI (Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence) session on 19 August 1945, with its first governor being Sutardjo Kertohadikusumo. This province consisted of five residencies: the Bantam Residency (Banten), the Batavia Residency (Jakarta), the Buitenzorg Residency (Bogor), the Preanger Residency (Priangan), and the Cheribon Residency (Cirebon).

Territories of West Java as of 1945:

  • Bantam Residency
    • Serang Regency
    • Pandeglang Regency
    • Lebak Regency
  • Batavia Residency
    • Tangerang Regency
    • Bekasi Regency
    • Stadsgemeente Batavia

In 1947, the Dutch attempted to establish a pro-Dutch state in the West Java region in the form of a republic called the Pasundan Republic, which would be led by Raden Adipati Aria Moehammad Moesa Soeria Kartalegawa, but this attempt failed.

In 1948, the Dutch tried again to establish a pro-Dutch state in the West Java region in the form of a federal state called the State of West Java, comprising the regions of Banten, Batavia Federal District, and Pasundan, and led by Raden Aria Adipati Wiranatakusumah V, and on 26 February 1948 this state was successfully established, and on 24 April 1948, the State of West Java officially changed its name to the State of Pasundan. But even though Wiranatakusumah V became the leader of the State of Pasundan, he did not hesitate to support the struggle for Indonesian independence, and on March 11, 1950, Wiranatakusumah V handed over the State of Pasundan to Indonesia, represented by his deputy, Djuarsa.

The re-establishment of this provincial area was based on Law No. 11 of 1950, the territory of this province includes the former areas of the Banten Residency, Batavia Residency, Buitenzorg Residency, Priangan Residency, and Cirebon Residency.
