Vijay Kumar (born Waheed Kazi; c. 1941 – 3 April 2020) was an Indian actor who appeared in Hindi-language films during the 1960s and 1970s. Born into a prominent cinematic family, he was the younger brother of the veteran comedian Johnny Walker and the brother-in-law of actress Madhubala. Kumar is best known for his leading role opposite Waheeda Rehman in the 1963 family drama Kaun Apna Kaun Paraya.[1]
Kumar was born as Waheed Kazi into a conservative family. His elder brother, Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi, achieved legendary status in Indian cinema under the screen name Johnny Walker. Following his brother's footsteps into the film industry, Waheed adopted the professional moniker Vijay Kumar.[2]
Kumar was married to Shahida Kazi (known professionally as Leena), who was the younger sister of the iconic actress Madhubala.[2][3] The couple had two children, Tehzeen and Armaan. On 3 April 2020, Kumar died of a cardiac arrest in Mumbai at the age of 79.[2]
Kumar made his acting debut in the late 1950s, appearing in Chand Ki Duniya (1959). In 1961, he starred in the action film Wanted, which was co-produced by his brothers.[2]
His career milestone came in 1963 when he was cast as the romantic male lead opposite Waheeda Rehman in the Golden Era social drama Kaun Apna Kaun Paraya.[2][4] He subsequently appeared alongside Mala Sinha and Sanjay Khan in the romantic feature Dillagi (1966).[2] Later in his career, he transitioned into character roles, making appearances in films such as Zehreela Insaan (1974) and Johnny Walker's directorial project Pahunchey Huwe Log (1986).
