  • Comment: More scholarly sources about the Trance Gate have now been added to this article. This topic cannot be merged with the wikipedia article about the Noise Gate. In simple words: Trance Gate ≠ Noise Gate! More advanced clarification: This article is related to the music production technique and not the noise gate (hardware). The Trance Gate is a rhythmic pattern/effect created with volume modulation. There are many ways to do volume modulation with audio technology and software. Noise gates are just one of many options that modulate volume. Noise gates can be used in a special configuration with external triggers to achieve this on/off gating. By today's standards, the trance gate effect is rarely achieved by a hardware noise gate.
  • Comment: I don't think this is quite yet notable enough for a standalone article, based on the sources provided (YouTube is considered WP:USERGENERATED). I'd suggest merging into the relevent subsection above, or finding some more scholarly sources. nil nz 05:00, 23 March 2026 (UTC)

A Trance Gate is a rhythmic on-off volume modulation effect used in electronic music, primarily Trance.

example of typical chords with trance gate effect

Originally, this effect has been created with a noise gate using an external audio source.[1] (e.g. synthesizer.[2][3], drum machine[4][5][6]) as a trigger to create a rhythmic gated pattern on the affected synthesizer[4] or sampler.

hardware noise gate used to create gating effects on synthesizer/sampler[4]

With current music technology the trance gate effect can be (and often is) created using other volume modulation tools[7] (e.g. Kilohearts Trance Gate[8][9][10], IL Gross Beat, LFOTool[11], Flux Mini 2, Flux Pro and many more), step sequencer or manual volume automation[12]

A trance-gate-like rhythm can also be achieved by a certain placement of midi notes on the affected sound source. However, the result might be different compared to using a trance gate, due to the continuous triggering of a new midi note on the synthesizer/sampler instead of gating the volume.

History

Synthesizer gating techniques started to get used in music productions since the 1980s.[4]. The popularity of this technique increased further during the 1990s[14], especially in trance music, where it became a unique sound characteristic of the genre. In classic trance, this effect was usually applied to sawthooth wave synthesizer chords or choir samples[5]

The usage of the trance gate effect expanded into various music genres and continues to be used in modern productions[6]
