Tembo (legally Tembo Data Systems, Inc.) is an American software company headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, that develops a platform for AI-assisted software maintenance using coding agents.[1][2] The company was co-founded by Ry Walker, Darren Baldwin Jr., and Benjamin Akar.[3] Originally launched in 2023 as a managed PostgreSQL cloud database service,[4] Tembo announced in May 2025 that it was transitioning to a platform focused on AI coding agents that generate pull requests by monitoring production systems for software defects and performance issues.[5]

The company name "Tembo" is derived from the Swahili word for "elephant," a reference to the PostgreSQL project's elephant mascot.[4]

History

Founding and early development

Tembo was founded by Ry Walker, a serial entrepreneur based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Walker studied computer science at the University of Cincinnati before leaving to start a web agency called Sharkbytes in the 1990s.[2] He later founded Differential, a venture studio, from which emerged Astronomer, an open-source data orchestration platform that Walker co-founded.[2] Astronomer subsequently raised more than $280 million in venture capital and was valued at over $1 billion, according to TechCrunch.[2][6]

Walker founded Tembo after departing Astronomer.[2] He was joined by co-founders Darren Baldwin Jr. as Chief technology officer and Benjamin Akar as Chief product officer.[3]

Tembo Cloud (2023–2025)

Tembo initially operated a managed PostgreSQL service under the product name Tembo Cloud. The platform supported over 200 PostgreSQL extensions and offered pre-built configurations called "Tembo Stacks," which were PostgreSQL deployments tuned for specific workloads such as time-series, graph, vector, and document data.[1][7]

Tembo Cloud was available as both a software as a service offering and as self-hosted software for deploying PostgreSQL databases.[2] In 2024, the company released a Machine Learning Stack that enabled developers to build and deploy AI models alongside their databases.[2]

According to the company, over 15,000 developers used Tembo Cloud during its period of operation.[5]

Transition to AI-assisted software maintenance (2025)

On May 5, 2025, Tembo announced it was transitioning from its managed PostgreSQL service to a platform focused on AI-assisted software maintenance.[5] The company stated that the new product uses AI coding agents to monitor production systems through integrations with tools such as Sentry and New Relic, and generates pull requests on GitHub to address detected issues.[5]

Tembo said the transition originated from an internal prototype called "dba.ai," an AI agent that identified slow PostgreSQL queries and submitted pull requests with proposed fixes.[5]

Following the announcement, Tembo published a migration timeline for existing Tembo Cloud customers, with hobby-tier instances to be migrated by May 30, 2025, and paid accounts by June 27, 2025.[5]

As of 2025, the platform integrates with GitHub, Slack, Linear, Sentry, New Relic, Notion, and Jira, and supports multiple third-party AI coding agents.[3][8]

Funding

Tembo has raised approximately $20 million in venture capital across two funding rounds.[2]

In December 2023, the company announced a seed round of approximately $6.5 million led by Venrock, with participation from Fireroad, CincyTech, and Wireframe Ventures.[4]

In July 2024, Tembo closed a $14 million Series A round led by GreatPoint Ventures, with participation from Venrock, Grand Ventures, Wireframe Ventures, Defined VC, and Cintrifuse Capital.[1][2][9] Angel investors in the round included DJ Patil and Ray Lane.[9]

At the time of the Series A, the company had approximately 25 employees.[2]

Technology

Open source

Tembo has published open-source projects on GitHub under the "tembo" organization. During its managed PostgreSQL phase, the company contributed to the PostgreSQL extension ecosystem and released its Tembo Stacks as an open-source library.[7]

Current platform

As of 2025, Tembo's platform functions as an orchestration layer that connects AI coding agents to developer tools and monitoring systems. The system uses scheduled tasks and webhooks to detect issues from monitoring integrations and generates pull requests for human review. The platform supports multiple coding agents and AI models.[5][3][8]
