Techem (stylized as techem) is a German energy services company headquartered in Eschborn, Germany. The company provides submetering, consumption-based billing, and energy management services for residential and commercial properties.

Techem operates in 18 countries and provides services for approximately 13.7 million dwellings worldwide.

The company has undergone multiple ownership changes involving international private equity investors, including a €4.6 billion acquisition in 2018 and a proposed €6.7 billion transaction announced in 2024, which was closed in October 2025..^[1][2][3].

Techem was founded in 1952 in Frankfurt by Friedrich Ott. The company initially focused on technologies for consumption-based billing of heating in multi-family buildings, including evaporative heat cost allocators. Following the introduction of Germany’s Heating Costs Ordinance (Heizkostenverordnung) in 1981, which mandated individual billing of heating costs, demand for such services increased significantly.
