Tangem Wallet is a multi-chain, non-custodial cryptocurrency wallet available on Android and iOS. Developed by Andrey Kurennykh and Andrew Pantyukhin in 2017, it supports digital assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and others. It resembles a physical device which stores private keys inside a secure shell element embedded with an NFC antenna. This allows users to authorize blockchain transactions by tapping it against a smartphone’s receiver module.[1][2][3]

History

The device originated as the Tangem Note, a single-currency physical ‘banknote’ for various blockchains which launched in Singapore in June 2018.[4] Eventually it became the multi-currency version in sets of two or three cards, allowing private keys to be backed up across multiple devices as an alternative to seed phrases.[5]

In 2024, a ring-shaped version of the Tangem Wallet was released, based on the same chip and NFC technology.[1][2]

Technology

The Tangem Wallet is comprised of an NFC antenna and a secure element chip embedded in a plastic card. The microprocessor developed by Samsung Semiconductor is certified to Common Criteria EAL6+.[6]

The chip is designed to generate private keys internally during wallet setup and never extract them outside the device. The firmware is embedded in the chip during the manufacturing process.[6]
