Talkdesk is a private company headquartered in Palo Alto, California. It develops and markets cloud-based customer experience (CX) and call center software.
Talkdesk was founded in 2011 by Cristina Fonseca and Tiago Paiva,[1] when they joined the Twiliocon hackathon competition with the Talkdesk idea[2] and won the $50,000 prize. The cofounders relocated to San Francisco from Portugal to focus on the startup full-time.[2] At the time, software like Talkdesk to manage a call center was a novel idea.[2] Talkdesk started with $450,000 in seed funding and three employees in Mountain View, California.[3] Its first product was released in 2012 at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference.[1]
Talkdesk grew to 1,200 employees by 2020.[4] It raised $15 million in venture capital in 2015,[1] followed by $100 million in October 2018 for a $1 billion valuation,[5][6] and $143 million in July 2020.[4][5] In 2021, a series D funding round valued Talkdesk at $10 billion,[7][5][8] and brought the company's total funding to $498 million.[8]
Talkdesk develops and markets cloud-based customer experience and call center software and services, focused on artificial intelligence applications.[4][5] Early versions were focused on human operators[9] by providing call queuing, automatic dialing,[2] call transcription, and integrations with customer relationship management tools.[3] Now it focuses more on AI agents that route callers and handle basic customer service inquiries.[9] Talkdesk also develops integrations with software used in different industries, like healthcare, financial services, and retail.[10][11]
