TC Hug (stylised tc:hug) were an English alternative rock band formed in Ulverston, Cumbria,[1] in late 1993. The band's members were Murray Lewis on vocals, Simon Cross on guitar, Nick Chatterton on bass, and Danny Makov on drums. The band stopped releasing music in 1998, although Lewis continued his musical career in Kendal.[2]

History

The band began playing venues as early as January 1994, starting out at places such as BBC Studios in Manchester,[3] King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow,[4] and The Water Rats in London.[3]

After signing to Playtime Records as one of the labelmates of the Inspiral Carpets in 1996,[5] they played A Lazy Sunday Afternoon at Finsbury Park on 9 June,[6][7] a day before releasing their first single, "Day Today" on 10 June. Its B-sides were "Two Heads", "Minnesota Skies" and "Vision" and was released on CD and limited edition 7-inch vinyl.

On 12 August 1996, they released their second single, "I'm Doing Fine" on CD and limited 7-inch. It was produced by Jessica Corcoran and its painting and sleeve were done by John Godbert and D2 Design. Its B-sides were "Free Lunch" and "Every Coward". They also released the single on Betacam-SP on The Grapevine Label four days prior to its release.

In 1996, they released their third single, "Go-Go UFO" on CD and 7-inch. It had the same production and its B-sides were "Rubicon", "So Real" and "Assorted Saturates". The music video for the single was recorded in the basement of Queen Katherine Street drill hall in Kendal.[8]

In 1996, they released their fourth single, "Find" on CD and 7-inch. It was produced by John Robb and was engineered by Jonathon Barrett for the first three tracks and Colin Williams for the fourth track. Its B-sides were "Walnut Xanadu", "Fabled In Our Time" and "Fake". Music Week praised the single and said the band were a "feisty melodic rock in the American guitar idiom, reminiscent of Bob Mould among others, although they undeniably carve their own niche."[9]

In 1997, they released their debut studio album, Pie-MONDO on Amuse 34 CD. It was produced by Corcoran, engineered by Doug Cook and mastered by Frank Arkwright. The album featured many previously released singles and B-sides as well as some additional new tracks.

On 12 January 1998, they released their fifth single, "Greatest Hour" on orange-coloured promo CD, issued in a clear plastic wallet without any artwork. Its B-sides were "Penetrate", "Do U Believe" and "Seventies Freak".

Cross became a teacher at Croftlands Junior School in Ulverston and later appeared on the line-up for a July 2018 Kendal Calling festival.[10]
