T-Stat is a tissue oximetry device that uses visible white light spectroscopy to provide continuous, non-invasive measurements of tissue oxygen saturation. The technology has been studied as an adjunct to conventional monitoring methods in free tissue transfer and other surgical applications. In a prospective study of 31 free flaps, T-Stat measurements were compared with clinical examination and handheld Doppler monitoring; one flap demonstrated a decrease in tissue oxygen saturation before vascular compromise was identified clinically. [1]

Tissue oximetry using T-Stat has also been incorporated into postoperative monitoring protocols for free flap breast reconstruction, alongside clinical examination and Doppler assessment. In one published study, T-Stat was used to monitor flap perfusion through measurements of hemoglobin oxygen saturation. [2]

Technology

T-Stat is a tissue oximetry system that uses visible white light spectroscopy to measure tissue oxygen saturation (StO₂) and hemoglobin-related measurements. The system provides continuous measurements that can be displayed as numerical values and trends over time. [1][2]

Clinical Use

T-Stat has been studied as an adjunct for monitoring tissue perfusion following reconstructive surgical procedures, including free tissue transfer. Visible light spectroscopy has also been investigated in other clinical applications involving the assessment of tissue oxygenation and perfusion. [1][3][4]

In free tissue transfer, postoperative monitoring may include clinical examination, handheld Doppler assessment, and tissue oxygenation measurements. A prospective clinical study evaluated visible light spectroscopy using T-Stat in comparison with handheld Doppler for postoperative free tissue transfer monitoring. [1]

The use of tissue oximetry for free flap monitoring has been described in clinical studies and reports involving microsurgical and reconstructive procedures. [1][5]

Breast Reconstruction

Tissue oxygenation monitoring has been studied following autologous breast reconstruction involving free tissue transfer. In these procedures, clinicians monitor the transferred tissue for changes in perfusion that may be associated with vascular compromise. T-Stat has been used as one component of postoperative monitoring protocols for free flap breast reconstruction. [5][6]

Visible light spectroscopy has been investigated as a continuous adjunct to free tissue transfer monitoring, providing tissue oxygenation measurements that can be considered alongside clinical examination and other monitoring methods. [1][5]

Development and regulatory status

The T-Stat system has received FDA 510(k) clearance as a tissue saturation oximeter. The original T-Stat Microvascular Tissue Oximeter was cleared in 2004, and the T-Stat 2.0 Microvascular Tissue Oximeter received a subsequent 510(k) clearance in 2019. [3][4]

T-Stat has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has also received CE marking, indicating conformity with applicable European Union requirements for medical devices.
