Student 1 (stylized as student 1) is an Ethiopian-Eritrean rapper and producer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.[1] In 2017, City Pages ranked him ninth in its annual Picked to Click poll and published a profile examining his music and live performance style;[2] later that year, The Current included him in a feature on emerging Twin Cities rappers.[3]
Student 1 moved from Maryland to Minneapolis at age three and grew up in South Minneapolis. He later attended community college in Inver Grove Heights before leaving college to pursue music.[4]
In February 2017, Student 1 released the EP dichotomy. Lyrical Lemonade reviewed the seven-track project, with Timmy Risden discussing its varied production styles and noting that Student 1 produced one of its tracks himself.[5] In November, City Pages ranked Student 1 ninth in its 2017 Picked to Click poll and published an accompanying profile by Jack Spencer that discussed his wordplay, musical influences, beat selection, and live performance style.[2] The following month, Jeffrey Bissoy-Mattis included Student 1 in The Current's “The Come-Up” feature, writing about his flow, lyricism, creativity, local following, and live performances.[3]
In March 2018, The Current published a profile and interview with Student 1 that discussed his writing process, musical influences, and approach to performance.[4] He released his debut studio album, drag, on April 30, 2018.[6] His second studio album, UPPRCLSSMN, followed in 2019 and included “YIN/YANG”, a collaboration with rapper Tierra Whack.[7][8] In May 2019, Student 1 performed at Soundset on the festival's Atmosphere & Friends stage.[9]
In 2020, Student 1 released the single “nippy”. Reviewing the song for Lyrical Lemonade, John Matraia discussed its arrangement, production, vocal layering, and Student 1's delivery, describing it in the context of his development since the publication had first encountered his music.[10] That year, Student 1 was also scheduled to perform as an official artist at South by Southwest. After the festival was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, City Pages included him in its reporting on Minnesota musicians affected by the cancellation; Student 1 told the publication that he had previously attended SXSW independently in 2018.[11]
Student 1 returned to releasing music in 2022 with the album OFFTHEDUST!.[12] Carbon Sound published a feature on the project that discussed his return to music, the album's development, and the circumstances surrounding its creation.[13] The album was mixed by engineer Alex Tumay.[14] In September, The Current featured the music video for “pSiLLy MaTh” in its Friday Five column.[15]
In early 2023, Student 1 toured with Ghais Guevara, Tabby, and Defo on the Farewell to Rap Tour.[16] Later that year, he participated in First Avenue's inaugural Rock Lottery, where musicians were randomly assigned to temporary bands and given two days to write and rehearse. Student 1 performed with the group Andy Holmaas; in its review of the event, The Current noted that he and Jillian Rae alternated lead vocals during the set.[17] In 2024, Student 1 appeared at AFROPUNK BLKTOPIA in Brooklyn[18] and was part of the First Avenue Goes to the Fair revue at the Minnesota State Fair.[19]
In 2025, The Current again included Student 1 in its coverage of new Minnesota music, with Natalia Toledo featuring “HM07 ah bet” in the publication's June scouting report.[20] Student 1 released his fourth studio album, truant, on June 19, 2026.[21] In Sweety High, Amanda McArthur described the album as an experimental hip-hop project centered on themes of detachment, listlessness, dependency, self-understanding, and happiness.[1] In a review for Drop The Spotlight, Cesar Soto discussed the album's movement between electronic music, pop, trap, house, and boom-bap, while distinguishing between elements of the album he found more and less effective.[22] Student 1 supported truant on the Kayfabe Reveal Tour with Ghais Guevara in the summer of 2026.[22]
Writers have associated Student 1's early work with backpack rap. In a 2017 City Pages profile, Jack Spencer emphasized his wordplay, shifting flows, and varied beat selection, while comparing elements of his style to artists including Slug, MF DOOM, Childish Gambino, and Chance the Rapper.[2] Later that year, Jeffrey Bissoy-Mattis of The Current similarly highlighted Student 1's flow, lyricism, and experimentation.[3]
Student 1 has cited Slug and MF DOOM as musical influences.[4] Later reviews have discussed changes in his production and songwriting. In 2020, John Matraia of Lyrical Lemonade discussed “nippy” in terms of its production, vocal layering, arrangement, and Student 1's delivery.[10] Reviewing truant in 2026, Cesar Soto of Drop The Spotlight described the album as moving between electronic music, pop, trap, house, and boom-bap.[22] Paul Thompson of POW MAG also discussed the stylistic contrasts within truant.[23] Writing about “kevinkevinkevin”, Steven Louis of POW MAG characterized the track in terms of funk,[24] while Eimear O Sullivan of Musicngear discussed its electronic sound.[25]
