SpaceRISE (Space Consortium for a Resilient, Interconnected and Secure Europe) is a European industrial consortium contracted to develop and operate the IRIS² satellite constellation for the European Union.[1][2]
The consortium is led by SES, Eutelsat and Hispasat.[3][1]
In October 2024, the European Commission selected SpaceRISE as concessionaire for IRIS² following a procurement process.[1][4] On 16 December 2024, the consortium signed a 12-year concession contract with the Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA) in Brussels.[2][3][5]
Background
IRIS² was established by the European Union as a secure, multi-orbit satellite communications programme and is the EU's third flagship space programme after Galileo and Copernicus.[2][3]
The European Commission awarded contracts for the IRIS² satellite constellation to a consortium of satellite operators including SES, Eutelsat and Hispasat, to develop a multi-orbit system of more than 280 satellites for secure communications and commercial services.[3][6]
Structure
The consortium is led by SES, Eutelsat and Hispasat, and includes Airbus Defence and Space, OHB, Telespazio, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Hisdesat, Thales Alenia Space and Thales.[7]
