Solar Manley is an American classical pianist. He gained recognition in 2025, winning the BSO Youth Concerto Competition. He is also an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, having performed on other instruments for his high school.[1]
Upbringing
At age 4, Manley began studying piano under the tutelage of his grandmother, Janelda Barnett. In 2022, he started taking lessons with Fred Hammond, (B.M., M.M., Juilliard) a teacher who has been associated with the Indiana University Young Pianists Program for 20 years.[1][2]
Manley has played in several high school music ensembles, including the marching band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Lab Ensemble, and Chamber Choir. He played accordion in his school's 2024 marching band show, titled "Death of the Tango," and is involved with ISSMA Solo and Ensemble as an accompanist.[1]
Competitions
In January of 2025,[3] Manley placed 1st in the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra competition, winning the chance to perform with the orchestra in October of that year. He has also played solos at ISSMA Solo and Ensemble, winning gold medals with distinction at the state level on piano and clarinet.[1]
