Senbete (Amharic: ሰንበቴ) is a town in north-central Ethiopia. Located in the Oromia Special Zone of the Amhara Region, it serves as the administrative center and capital of the Jile Tumuga woreda.
Overview
Senbete is historically and culturally significant as a major economic crossroad along the edge of the Ethiopian highlands. The town is widely known for its vibrant weekly Sunday market (from which it derives its name, Senbete, meaning "Sunday" in Amharic). The market serves as a vital trading hub where the agriculturalist Amhara people, pastoralist Oromo people, and lowland Afar people meet to trade livestock, grains, textiles, and local goods.
Geography
The town sits situated near the border shared between the Amhara and Afar regions, lying southwest of the zonal capital, Kemise, and north of Shewa Robit.
Demographics
Based on projections derived from the 2007 national census conducted by the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA), Senbete constitutes the largest urban settlement within the Jile Tumuga woreda. The population is highly diverse, reflecting the intersecting cultural boundaries of the Oromia Special Zone, with significant populations speaking both Afaan Oromo and Amharic. The predominant religion practiced in the town and surrounding woreda is Islam.
