Satyanarayanan Chakravarthy (born November 30, 1968) is a professor of aerospace engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras)[1]and the founder and Chief technical officer of The ePlane Company (incorporated as Ubifly Technologies Private Limited),[2] an electric aviation venture focused on urban air mobility and co founder of Agnikul Cosmos.[3] He also founded and heads the National Centre for Combustion Research & Development (NCCRD) - one of the world’s largest research centres that houses state-of-the-art infrastructure for combustion research.[4][2][5]
Satya Chakravarthy completed a Bachelor of Technology in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Madras in 1991.[6] He subsequently pursued graduate studies in the United States at the Georgia Institute of Technology, earning a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering in 1992 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1995, with research focused on aerospace engineering, combustion, and propulsion systems.[7][8][9]
Following a postdoctoral period at Georgia Tech until approximately 1997, Satya Chakravarthy joined IIT Madras as a faculty member in the Department of Aerospace Engineering.[1] He has also held visiting positions at Georgia Tech (2000–2001) and the Technische Universität Darmstadt (2002, 2003, 2006, and 2009).[10]
Alongside his academic position, he has been associated with several technology ventures. He co-founder and advisor of AgniKul Cosmos, [11]a space launch vehicle startup, in February 2017, and GalaxEye, a satellite technology company, in May 2021. Since February 2022, he has served as a co-founder and part-time advisor to TuTr Hyperloop.[12][11]
In 2019, Satya Chakravarthy founded Ubifly Technologies Private Limited, operating commercially as The ePlane Company, which is incubated at IIT Madras.[13]The company is developing eVTOL aircraft for urban mobility applications. Its primary aircraft under development, the e200X, is a three-seater eVTOL with a projected range of approximately 200 km and a target speed of around 150 km/h - 200km/h.[14][15]
In 2023, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) granted the company Design Organisation Approval for an electric aircraft.[16][17][18][19][20] In early 2025, the DGCA accepted the company's application for type certification of its eVTOL aircraft. The company raised $14 million in its Series B round. [21][22][23][24]
