Ron Simonian is a playwright whose work has been produced in Kansas City, New York and Chicago.[1][2] His play Thanatos was produced Off-Broadway in 1995 after its world premiere at Kansas City's Unicorn Theatre, and was later staged at Chicago's National Pastime Theatre.[3][4] Simonian has had seven plays receive world premieres at the Unicorn.[5]
Simonian studied film and theater at the University of Kansas.[6] According to a 2012 KCUR profile, his first play was produced in 1992 in a warehouse in Kansas City's Crossroads District. The work, Thanatos, began as a screenplay before Simonian adapted it for the stage.[1]
The Unicorn Theatre presented the world premiere of Thanatos during its 1993–94 season.[5] The play received the theater's 1993 National Playwright's Award. Reviewing the Unicorn production for Variety in 1994, John Quinn reported that Thanatos had been selected from approximately 450 entries in the theater's national playwriting competition.[7] The Kansas City Star subsequently published several features and reviews about Simonian and the play.[6][8]
In March 1995, Thanatos was staged at Alice's Fourth Floor on West 42nd Street in New York. The Kansas City Star sent theater writer Robert Trussell to New York for a feature on the production, which used a Kansas City director and actors.[9] Two days later, D. J. R. Bruckner reviewed Thanatos for The New York Times, describing Simonian's dialogue and the production in an extended review.[3]
The Unicorn continued to stage Simonian's work, giving world premieres to Arms and Legs (1995–96), At the Feet of Doves (1996–97), Zone 3 (1997–98), Slight Defect: A Desert Holiday (2000–01), Next of Kin (2005–06) and The Soul Collector (2012–13), in addition to Thanatos.[5] Variety reviewed Arms and Legs in December 1995.[10] The National New Play Network has described Simonian as the Unicorn's most-produced playwright, citing the seven world premieres.[11]
In 1998, Chicago's National Pastime Theatre produced Thanatos. Chris Jones reviewed the production for the Chicago Tribune on June 24, discussing the play's treatment of death and violence; the review listed the production as running through July 31.[4]
KCUR profiled Simonian in 2012 in connection with the Unicorn world premiere of The Soul Collector. The feature looked back at his career, including the early production of Thanatos, its move to an Off-Broadway theater and his long association with the Unicorn. The Soul Collector ran at the Unicorn from December 6 through 23, 2012.[1]
After a period away from theater while raising his son, Simonian returned to playwriting in Kansas City. In 2017 The Living Room presented the world premiere of his two-character play Trigger Happy, directed by Rusty Sneary and starring Scott Cordes and Mark Robbins.[12] In a separate KC Studio feature later that year, Trussell discussed Simonian's return to the theater and noted that his plays had been staged at the Unicorn and other Kansas City venues as well as in Chicago and New York.[2]
