Robust Intelligence was founded in 2019 by Harvard computer science professor Yaron Singer and his former student Kojin Oshiba. The company grew out of Singer's research on adversarial machine learning and the vulnerability of AI models to manipulated inputs.[1][4]
In October 2020, the company emerged from stealth and announced $14 million in seed and Series A funding led by Sequoia Capital.[1] In December 2021, it announced a $30 million Series B round led by Tiger Global, with participation from Sequoia Capital, Harpoon Ventures, and Engineering Capital.[2][5]
The company's products included software for stress-testing artificial intelligence systems and a monitoring layer it described as an "AI firewall".[2][6]
Robust Intelligence researchers, working with collaborators at Yale University, developed Tree of Attacks with Pruning (TAP), an automated method for testing the security of large language models. The work showed that smaller language models could be used to automate jailbreak attacks against larger systems, and it was later published at NeurIPS 2024.[6][7]
The company's research also examined security risks associated with fine-tuning foundation models and methods for extracting training data from AI systems.[4]
In August 2024, Cisco announced its intent to acquire Robust Intelligence.[3][8]
Calcalist later reported that the acquisition price was $400 million, although Cisco did not publicly disclose the financial terms.[9]
Following the acquisition, Singer joined Cisco to lead Foundation AI, a group focused on artificial intelligence for cybersecurity. Several publications described Cisco's Foundation AI organization as being built around the team and technology acquired from Robust Intelligence.
