Rex Ip-fu Li (born 1953) is a psychologist and educator in Hong Kong. Li’s biggest contribution has been establishing G.T. (Ellen Yeung) College (1996).[1] The school became Band 1 – a top-tier ranking in Hong Kong – for both its primary and secondary sections.[2] His research deals with gifted education, multiple intelligences, and John Dewey’s ideas about learning.

Early Life and Education

Li was born in 1953 in Hong Kong and went on to attend Wah Yan College, Hong Kong for secondary education. In 1976, he received a Bachelor of Social Sciences from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He earned a Master of Business Administration from Pace University in 1983 and a Doctor of Education from Columbia University in 1995.[3]

Career

Li started his first school, the English Medium Tutorial School, in 1977. Eight years later he founded the Supermind Institute of Learning. In 1988 he founded the Gifted Education Council (GEC), which became a registered Hong Kong charity the following year.[4] He organized the International Gifted Youth Summit in 1995 and co-hosted the 11th World Conference of Gifted and Talented Children in Hong Kong. That same year, he founded the Hong Kong Mathematical Olympiad School.

In 1996, Li founded G.T. College, a Band 1 secondary and primary school in Hong Kong which was later renamed to G.T. (Ellen Yeung) College. The school is a DSS English-medium school that uses the International Baccalaureate programme and focuses on multiple intelligences and gifted education[5]. The school has engaged in cross-border educational exchanges, including with Guangzhou schools, to explore new teaching methods.[6]

Li was appointed Visiting Professor at the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997. Li went on to create the G.T. Education Foundation in 2002, building on the work of his earlier institutions.[3] In 2011, Hangzhou News wrote about Li’s work, highlighting how he blends Dewey’s ideas with Chinese educational traditions.[6] In 2016, he became a Visiting Professor at Fudan University, where he collaborated on editing Selected Works of John Dewey and helped establish the Fudan-Dewey Lecture Series.[7] In 2024, he became Adjunct Professor at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand.

Research on John Dewey

Li's work has been influenced by the educational theories of John Dewey with a focus on experiential learning, and multiple intelligences, which he applied to his established schools along with his International M.I Forums. He edited Dewey's Selected Works – Psychology and Education (2017) and authored Rediscovering John Dewey: How His Psychology Transforms Our Education (2020).

Li has criticised Hong Kong and other Asian education systems for focusing too much on exams and rote learning and follows in Dewey's philosophies to push for more experiential, inquiry-based methods in his schools.[3] His Dewey-based programmes at the Gifted Education Council and G.T. (Ellen Yeung) College moved away from the old education model towards hands-on learning.

Multiple Intelligence Forums and International Engagements

Li has organized Multiple Intelligences (M.I.) Forums bringing together teachers from Asia and Western countries to discuss teaching philosophies. In 2020, he established Research MI, a peer-reviewed academic journal focusing on multiple intelligences. In 2023, he organized the 3rd International M.I. Education Forum in Hong Kong, which led to the formation of the Global Multiple Intelligences School Network (G-MISNET). Li was elected the first president of G-MISNET.[8]
