Peter Lodwick (born 1944) is a Welsh composer and musician whose career has been based largely in Norway.[1][2] He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and worked as a concert musician in Europe and the United States before moving to Norway.[3]

Lodwick has composed music for theatre, film, television and dance and has also worked as a performer and teacher.[2][3] In 1974 he co-founded the interdisciplinary performing-arts group Brobyggere with Solveig Leinan-Hermo and Thea Stabell.[4] In 1988 he and dancer and choreographer Marit Krogeide established Stage Productions, which was renamed Dans & Toner in 1996.[5]

Career

After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, Lodwick worked as a musician in Europe and the United States. PRODA describes his later work in Norway as including composition for ballet and theatre, musical performance, teaching and collaboration with Norwegian contemporary choreographers.[3]

Danseinformasjonen interviewed Lodwick in 2010 as part of its Norwegian dance-history documentation project, citing his work with Ballettinstituttet, Statens Balletthøgskole and Dans & Toner.[1]

Composition

Theatre

In 1972, Lodwick composed the music for the National Theatre production of Georg Büchner's Leonce and Lena, directed by Edith Roger. He also performed in the production on harpsichord.[6]

His subsequent Norwegian theatre credits include Eksperiment (1973), Kriger med ord (1975), Bryn og Grønvold (1976), Lille Eyolf (1978), Jorden rundt på 80 dager (1978), En gutts lykke (1979) and 39 Røde Sting (1992).[7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

Lodwick also composed music for several works by playwright Peder Wright Cappelen, including Trollspill, Manndattera og Kjerringdattera and Hvittenland.[14][15][16]

Film and television

The National Library of Norway's filmography credits Lodwick as a composer on the Norwegian films Oss and Angst, both released in 1976. Oss was directed by Laila Mikkelsen, while Angst was directed by Oddvar Bull Tuhus.[17][18]

Sceneweb also credits Lodwick with music for the BBC dance works Horizon and Of Cabbages and Kings, choreographed by Jack Nightingale, as well as with the children's music-and-dance television project Amandus for NRK.[2]

Dance

In 1971 Lodwick collaborated with choreographer Irene Dilks on Point Counterpoint, an interdisciplinary production combining music, dance and improvisation. It premiered at the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, with Lodwick credited as composer, musician and singer.[19]

Lodwick composed the music for Jane Hveding's 1991 dance production Poems – en tankes flukt at Det Norske Teatret. Hveding received the Norwegian Dance Critics' Award for the production for the 1991–1992 season.[20][21]

For Collage Dance Company's 1993 production of Pinocchio, produced in collaboration with Riksteatret and Black Box Teater, Lodwick was credited as composer and musician and also appeared as the storyteller Collodini.[22]

Performing companies

Brobyggere

Lodwick, dancer and choreographer Solveig Leinan-Hermo and actress Thea Stabell established Brobyggere in Oslo in 1974. Sceneweb describes the group's purpose as combining dance, music and theatre into a common artistic form. In 1975 the group began collaborating with the Norwegian Opera under its then director Gunnar Brunvoll, with plans for Brobyggere to operate as a touring company associated with the Opera.[4]

During the Opera Ballet's visit to the arts festival in Harstad in 1975, Brobyggere presented the productions Oss, Måke and Triangel. Sceneweb records that an agreement for continued cooperation was prepared but was not completed after Brunvoll left his position.[4]

Dans & Toner

Marit Krogeide and Lodwick founded Stage Productions in 1988; the company changed its name to Dans & Toner in 1996. Sceneweb describes the company as specializing in live dance set to newly composed music for children and young people.[5]

According to Sceneweb, Dans & Toner performed for more than 300,000 children and young people and received annual operating support from Norway's Ministry of Culture and Arts Council Norway between 1994 and 1998.[5] Lodwick has been credited as the company's artistic director, composer and musician.[2]

Teaching and dance accompaniment

PRODA states that Lodwick developed his own rhythm technique and taught at institutions including the former National Academy of Theatre, the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and the Norwegian Academy of Music.[3] Sceneweb additionally describes his work in rhythm and improvisation and states that parts of the approach were published in the dance textbook Dans!.[2][23]

Lodwick has also worked as a répétiteur for dance training. PRODA's professional profile describes his work composing for dance and collaborating with Norwegian contemporary choreographers.[3]

Discography

Sceneweb lists four releases by Lodwick: Music for Ballet Class, Vol. 1 (2002), Music for Modern Dance Class (2006), Music for Ballet Class, Vol. 2 (2010) and Moments (2012).[2]
