PandaMania was a public arts project that took place in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 2004. Run by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH), it put 150 panda statues across the District of Columbia, each of which was painted and designed by independent artists. At the end of the display period, each panda was auctioned off to fund the Commission's arts grants and arts education programs. [1]: 7
Following in the footsteps of CowParade, many cities across the U.S. were creating their own installations of public art projects. CAH made their own project called Party Animals in 2002, which placed 100 donkey statues and 100 elephant statues around the District. This project would serve as the inspiration for PandaMania two years later.[1]: 7
The choice of pandas stems from the arrival of Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing at the Smithsonian National Zoo in 1972. The pandas became a quick tourist attraction and brought many tourists to the District of Columbia.[2] Given the popularity of pandas among Washingtonians, pandas were chosen as the subject of the next project.[1]: 7
Out of 1200 proposals, 150 were chosen to paint and decorate these statues. Each artist received a $1500 stipend and statue of a panda in one of two poses: standing and sitting. The Kaempfer Co provided a working space in Southwest Washington for the artists to get their work done.[2]
The Commission partnered with The Scorpions Incorporated to install the panda statues over a period of five nights in May.[1]: 153
