PHPRunner is a commercial software development tool developed by Xlinesoft for creating database-driven web applications in PHP.[1] The software uses a wizard-based workflow to generate web interfaces connected to relational databases, including forms, grids, reports, charts, dashboards and other data-management pages.[1][2]

Overview

PHPRunner is used to build web-based applications that interact with local or remote databases. Softpedia described the application as a tool for creating data-driven web applications with database support, using ready-made projects, templates and a wizard-based architecture.[1] According to KeyCDN, PHPRunner can generate database-driven applications including forms, grids, reports and charts, and supports templates, permissions, uploads, linked dropdown boxes and multiple database types.[2]

The software has been described as part of the broader category of PHP code generators, alongside tools such as Scriptcase, PHPMaker and PHP Generator.[2]

File format

PHPRunner projects use the .phpr file extension. FileInfo describes a PHPR file as a project file created by Xlinesoft PHPRunner that stores XML data used to load an application-creation project in the software.[3]

Research and analysis

A 2024 article in Engineering and Technology Journal compared source-code complexity in PHP web applications generated by PHPMaker and PHPRunner with applications written using Laravel and CakePHP. The study examined cyclomatic and relative system complexity, concluding that commercial code generators could speed up program writing while producing code that may be more complex to maintain than manually written code.[4]

Another 2024 study in the Journal of Software Engineering and Simulation compared programming time when using PHPMaker, PHPRunner, CakePHP and manual Laravel coding. In the study, six programmers created and modified a test inventory application using the different tools and frameworks; the paper reported that the code-generator approaches reduced program-writing time compared with manual Laravel development in the tested scenario.[5]

Reception and commentary

In an August 2005 product review in php|architect, Peter B. MacIntyre reviewed PHP Runner 2.0 as a tool for prototyping PHP and MySQL applications. The review described the software as wizard-based and primarily useful for quick database-backed web application prototyping, and rated it 4.5 out of 5 stars.[6]

Independent consultant Paul Irvine later described PHPRunner as a rapid application development tool for database-driven business applications, comparing its development style to earlier RAD tools such as PowerBuilder.[7]
