Matilda Melin, known professionally as Orkid, is a Swedish singer and songwriter from Östersund. She competed in the Swedish television series Idol in 2013, finishing in sixth place.[1] She began releasing music under the name Orkid in 2017.[2]

Her debut extended play, Where Flowers Grow (2024), was nominated for Newcomer of the Year at the 2025 Grammis Awards.[3] In January 2025, she won the Framtidens artist ("Future Artist") award at P3 Guld.[4]

Early life and Idol

Matilda grew up in Östersund. She has said that she spent several hours singing karaoke after school and decided at an early age that she wanted to become a professional singer. She later moved to Stockholm to pursue a career in music.[5]

Matilda participated in the 2013 season of the Swedish version of Idol, placing sixth. She returned during the auditions for the 2015 season after judge Alexander Bard invited her to compete again despite a rule that ordinarily prevented previous contestants from returning.[1]

Music career

2017–2018: Early releases

Matilda adopted the stage name Orkid and released her debut single, "Soulmates", in 2017. It was followed by "Only If You Want To", with both releases issued through the Stockholm label ART:ERY.[2][6]

In 2018, she released the singles "Wasted", "NoNoh", "Obvious" and "Hands". The Line of Best Fit described "Hands" as an emotive change of direction from her earlier, more upbeat releases. Melin stated that the song concerned the fear, anger and sadness associated with nearly losing someone close to her.[7]

2024–present: Where Flowers Grow and later releases

Orkid released her debut EP, Where Flowers Grow, in 2024. The five-track project addressed bereavement and the death of her mother, with songs including "Skin and Bones", "Where Flowers Grow" and "Silence".[8] The EP subsequently received a nomination for Newcomer of the Year at the 2025 Grammis Awards.[3]

In January 2025, Orkid won the listener-voted Future Artist award at P3 Guld. During the ceremony, she performed a mash-up of her song "Skin and Bones" with Killen.'s "Die for You".[4] She released the single "Eden" later that year.[9]

Her second EP, In All of My Tomorrows, was released through Warner Music Sweden in April 2026. The release continued the themes of grief and recovery explored on her debut EP while incorporating a stronger electronic element.[10]

Musical style and themes

Orkid's later work has been described as indie pop, alternative pop and synth-pop, combining atmospheric arrangements with prominent synthesizers, electronic production and emotionally direct songwriting. Ones to Watch described Where Flowers Grow as synth-laden pop and highlighted the warmth and intimacy of Orkid's vocal delivery.[8]

On In All of My Tomorrows, Orkid developed a more pronounced electronic sound. Melodic Magazine described the title track as alternative pop built around haunting vocals and synth- and electro-heavy production, noting that the release made greater use of electronic elements than her previous work.[11]

Her songwriting during this period has centred on grief, memory, love and emotional recovery. Where Flowers Grow was largely shaped by the death of her mother and explores bereavement through songs including "Skin and Bones", "Bed of Roses" and the title track.[8] Matilda has described In All of My Tomorrows as a continuation of these themes, focusing on the lasting nature of grief and the process of finding hope while continuing to live with loss.[10]
