OpenMetadata is an open-source platform for metadata management and data cataloguing. It collects and organizes metadata from databases, data warehouses, analytics tools, and data pipelines. Its functions include data discovery, governance, data lineage, quality testing, and data observability.[2][3]
OpenMetadata was released in 2021. According to a technical overview published by Atlan, its development drew on work previously undertaken on Uber's internal metadata infrastructure, including a system called Databook. OpenMetadata was developed separately from Uber's internal system.[2]
The source code is maintained on GitHub and distributed under the Apache License 2.0.[4]
In May 2025, OpenMetadata and the Wikimedia Foundation received grants of $10,000 each from Bloomberg's Free and Open Source Software Contributor Fund.[5]
OpenMetadata stores technical and business metadata in a centralized model and makes it accessible through APIs. Metadata is collected through connectors to databases, data warehouses, analytics software, messaging systems, and pipeline-management tools. Relationships among catalogued entities can be represented as a metadata graph.[2]
The software includes search and discovery functions, role-based access control, ownership records, lineage tracking, data-quality tests, and metadata versioning.[2]
A 2025 survey in IEEE Access examined 75 general-purpose data-catalog tools and listed OpenMetadata among tools supporting business glossaries and connectors to external data systems.[6] A study in Human-Centric Intelligent Systems classified OpenMetadata among open-source metadata platforms incorporating artificial-intelligence functions. The study described the use of natural language processing during ingestion to identify and tag personally identifiable information.[3] A review in the Journal of Systems and Software included OpenMetadata among standalone tools for metadata management and data cataloguing.[7]
