OU Nightly

Student Newscast

OU Nightly is an award-winning newscast at the University of Oklahoma striving to educate students on careers within the broadcast industry. With both teams, editorial and production, students are able to experience what it takes to run a professional news station.[1]

Platforms and Reach

OU Nightly is broadcast five days a week during the academic school year in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa television markets on YurView Oklahoma (formerly known as The Cox Channel). The program is also broadcast on the independent Cheyenne Arapaho Television channel.[2]

Outside of the traditional broadcast, OU Nightly content is live streamed on the program's YouTube[3] and Facebook[4] pages.

History

It's unclear when the first OU Nightly broadcast took place, but based on archives at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication it was sometime in the early 2000s.

OU Nightly's coverage of the University of the 2015 University of Oklahoma Sigma Alpha Epsilon racism incident was cited in the Teachers College Record.[5]

In February 2023, the program broadcast what is thought to be the first ever live severe weather coverage from a student newscast. Students were on the air for over three hours as a rare Winter tornado outbreak moved through central Oklahoma.[6][7]

Awards & Recognition

In 2026, the program was named the nation's best student newscast in the 4/5 day category at the Broadcast Educators Association, Festival of Media Arts.[8] The program was also named the state of Oklahoma's best student newscast by the Oklahoma Broadcast Educators Association.[9]
