OFF February is a global campaign that raises awareness on the impact of digital hyperconnection, inviting people to delete social media apps from their smartphones during the whole month of February. It aims to allow participants regaining control over their time and attention. Launched in 2026, it has spread very quickly to many countries around the world...[1]
Origin
The challenge emulates initiatives such as Dry January or Movember, that raise awareness on public health issues, such as alcohol consumption or cancer. It was launched by the OFF Movement, a foundation based in Spain, whose purpose is to mobilise humanity against the most negative consequences of digitisation[2].
OFF February justifies its action based on the growing scientific evidence of the link between the time spent on social media and the surge in mental health problems since the beginning of the 2010s.[3][4]
International Support
OFF February is supported by dozens of organisations from diverse backgrounds, that share the same concerns about the effects of the over-exposure to screens, including:
- Civil society organisations such as Smartphone Free Childhood (United States), Safe Screens (United Kingdom), Health Professionals for Safer Screens (United Kingdom)[5], Americans for Responsible Technology[6], Safe Tech International[7], environmental NGO Ecologistas en Acción[8] or Adolescencia Libre de Móviles.
- Scientific and medical societies, such as the Spanish Paediatric Society, The Spanish Association of Neurology, the Spanish Adolescence Medicine Society or the Global Health Institute of Barcelona[9].
- Cultural institutions, such as the French National Book Centre (Centre National du Livre), the Círculo de Bellas Artes[10], la Casa Encendida o the Fundación Ortega-Marañón[11]
- Universities, such as the University of Angers[12] or the Catholic University of Murcia[13]
- Public institutions such as the City of Marseille.
Overall, for its first edition, OFF February had 60 partner organisations on 4 continents.
The initiative has also received the support from experts and celebrities such as actress Sophie Winkleman, public health expert and Harvard professor Miguel-Ángel Martínez, or the former Spanish Data Protection Agency Director, Mar España.
