Novology is a brand of clinical skincare products from Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), a subsidiary of Unilever. Acne range
Novology's acne range incorporates a proprietary combination of thymol and terpineol, designated TT-2 by the manufacturer. Pigmentation range
The pigmentation range uses a three-component proprietary system designated HNR-3, comprising hexyl resorcinol, niacinamide, and retinyl propionate.
Hexyl resorcinol is a resorcinol derivative that inhibits tyrosinase enzyme activity, thereby reducing melanin biosynthesis in the skin. A study published in the Journal of Korean Medical Science reported hexyl resorcinol to demonstrate melanin-inhibiting activity in controlled assays.[4]
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) acts at a downstream stage of the melanogenesis pathway by inhibiting the transfer of melanosomes from melanocytes to keratinocytes, thereby reducing visible pigmentation at the skin surface. This mechanism has been described in studies published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science.[5]
Retinyl propionate is an ester form of vitamin A that promotes keratinocyte turnover, accelerating the displacement of pigmented cells at the epidermal level.[6]
Dry Skin range
The dry skin range incorporates a system designated Hya-B5, comprising multiple molecular-weight variants of hyaluronic acid combined with panthenol (pro-vitamin B5).
Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan present in the extracellular matrix of human dermis. It functions as a hygroscopic agent, retaining water and contributing to skin elasticity. Published research has demonstrated that different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid exhibit differential skin penetration depths, with low-molecular-weight forms reaching the dermis and high-molecular-weight forms remaining at the skin surface to form an occlusive film.[7]
Panthenol is a provitamin that converts to pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) in skin tissue and has been reported in clinical literature to support skin barrier repair and reduce transepidermal water loss.[8]
Sun protection range
Novology offers a sun protection range providing ultraviolet protection. Products in this range are described by the manufacturer as hypoallergenic and formulated for daily use in Indian climatic conditions.[1]
Anti-ageing range
The anti-ageing range uses a proprietary system designated Elastinol ANP4, comprising pro-retinol (retinyl propionate), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and signal peptides.
Pro-retinol is a precursor form of retinoic acid. Studies have reported retinol derivatives to promote collagen synthesis via fibroblast stimulation while exhibiting a lower irritation profile than prescription-strength tretinoin.[9]
Signal peptides are short amino acid chains that act as intercellular messengers. Published studies have reported synthetic signal peptides to stimulate collagen and elastin production in dermal fibroblasts.[10]
