PT Mekar Armada Jaya, known as New Armada, is a bus bodywork company based in Magelang Regency, Central Java. This company is one of the leading bus bodywork companies in Indonesia.
New Armada Bodywork starting with a home repair shop owned by David Herman Jaya's parents. David has been helping his father since junior high school. His entrepreneurial talent was evident from a young age, as before starting his bodywork business, he sold clothes and umbrellas at Rejowinangun Market. The idea for a bodywork company arose when David wanted to convert a Mitsubishi Colt T 120 SS pickup into a minibus. Initially, he intended it solely for his own use, not for sale. His creativity attracted a lot of interest, with a substantial initial workforce of 30 people recruited by Mr. David from Madiun. Interest also came from travel companies.
As orders began to pour in, David felt the land around his house was no longer sufficient. Finally, in 1976, he moved to a new location: a former vermicelli factory in Metroyudan District, Magelang. PT. Mekar Armada Jaya, known by its trademark, New Armada, was officially established there. New Armada's biggest gain came during the 1982 elections, when Mr. David was elected coordinator of election car procurement for sub-district heads throughout Indonesia. Orders were placed for thousands of orange-painted Mitsubishi Colt T120s. In 1981, New Armada operated as a main dealer for Mitsubishi products under the name PT. Bumen Redja Abadi, which now operates across Java and Bali. They also established Vulgo Armada Mobilindo, a dealership for various car brands such as Daihatsu, Isuzu, BMW, Peugeot, and Nissan Diesel.
By the late 1980s, New Armada's production capacity had increased rapidly. By 1990, New Armada expanded its factory to 18 hectares. With a workforce of 4,000, it collaborated extensively with car manufacturers (ATPMS) of leading Indonesian car manufacturers. However, this wasn't always smooth sailing, especially after ATPMS began producing their own bus bodies for their standard car variants (such as the Suzuki Carry, Mitsubishi Colt, Toyota Kijang, etc.), while local bodywork companies were limited to special orders for buses, public transportation, ambulances, and other vehicles. In the mid-1990s, Alexander's Bodyworks was also acquired. New Armada expanded its operations by establishing other businesses, such as establishing People's Credit Banks in several cities in Central Java. New Armada also increased its investment by bringing in machines to support production and improve the quality of its products. Consequently, many ATPMs ordered car components such as panels, hoods, upholstery, and more. In 2003, New Armada added a new location in Tambun, Bekasi. The location is not far from the Suzuki Assembly, which is specifically designed to be a supplier of car components for ATPM.
Here are some of the bus body products manufactured by New Armada Bodywork, both those still in production and those no longer in production:
