Mutani is an Antwerp, Belgium based fashion brand influenced by video game culture, anime and fantasy aesthetics. The brand was founded in 2021 by designer and researcher Shayli Harrison.
Their mission is to translate the worlds of gaming and anime into contemporary fashion for everyday life, alongside a vision to mainstream aspirational identities into modern culture.
In 2021, Harrison founded Mutani as a digital fashion agency, experimenting with technologies such as AI, AR, VR, 3D Clothing Design and Holography, creating projects at the intersection of fashion and gaming.
Pivoting in 2024, Mutani was re-established as a physical fashion brand aimed at creating more fashionable merchandise for the communities in gaming and anime culture.
The brand’s activities later on expanded into a research-led exploration on identity, dress and digital culture,[1] which are reflected in its fashion collections.
Mutani's fashion collections take inspiration from narrative and in-game elements such as characters, symbols, weapons and more, allowing wearers to embody their aspirational identities in daily life.
Their first collection, The First Mutani Magic collection, took inspiration from the highly coveted in-game weapon, The First Great Magic, from the Chinese game Genshin Impact.
Since 2024, Harrison has been affiliated with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp research group Intermatter. Her research into digital identity and avatars shaped Mutani’s design approach, which also supports the brand’s vision.
With her research project: Between Ego and Alter-Ego: avatars, cosplay and constructing identity, she studies how virtual characters and cosplay influence identity formation across virtual and physical environments. This research references the Proteus effect, a phenomenon where the embodiment of digital avatars influences real-world behavior.
Mutani projects have been presented at fashion, design, and cultural events, including SCOPE Art Show Miami, the Design Museum Den Bosch, and the Future Front Row digital fashion show presented during Amsterdam Fashion Week.
Additional showcases and presentations have taken place at design and technology festivals, including Love Tomorrow Festival and Brazilian Immersive Fashion Week.
Harrison has participated in talks, panels, and workshops on fashion, digital culture, and emerging design technologies. Having spoken at institutions such as the University of Antwerp, Antwerp Management School, and Central Saint Martins, as well as industry events such as Us By Night and Inhorgenta Munich.
In 2022, Harrison was nominated as Changemaker of the Year at the Belgian Fashion Awards.
In 2023, Harrison and Mutani were selected for the Henry van de Velde Awards in the Business Innovation and Digital Product categories. In that same year, Harrison was also included in the Knack 40 Under 40 to watch list.[2]
In 2024, Harrison was seen on the Marie Claire list of influential female voices in Belgian fashion.
Mutani and its founder have been featured in fashion and cultural media discussing digital fashion and gaming-influenced design. Publications that have covered the project include Red Eye[3], Fashion United[4], Scandinavian Mind[5], De Tijd[6], Financial Dagblad[7] and Gazet van Antwerpen[8].
