Mooned is an 2023 animated short film directed by Jonathan del Val and written by Pierre Coffin, who also produced alongside Chris Meledandri.[1] Produced by Illumination, the short film takes place after the events of the first film from the Despicable Me franchise as it follows supervillain Vector (voiced by Jason Segel) struggling to get off the moon after being launched into space by Gru.[3]
The short film was theatrically released alongside Migration on December 22, 2023 by Universal Pictures.[4] It was later released on DVD as a Bonus Feature from Migration as one of the Mini-Movies alongside Midnight Mission and the Migration original short Fly Hard.[5]

Upon being stranded on the Moon by Gru, Vector struggles to cope and panics. Jumping high enough to float towards Earth, he is knocked back down by a Minion who previously drank Dr. Nefario's Anti-Gravity Serum and is struggling to call his other Minion friends to pick him up. Unable to understand the Minion's language, Vector continue to focus on finding a way off the moon. He tries using the Lunar Lander but only to have his foot hurt. Using his space inflatable helmet, he tried many attempts to get off the moon with his gadgets; using his suit to inflate out, using the suit's limb stretcher to slingshot off the moon, and even using the Moon buggy to ramp off the Moon from a high point. No matter how much Vector tries, they all fail the same way. Down to his last resort, Vector uses the Lunar Lander as a ship with his suit's rockets while unaware, the Minions arrived on the Moon to pick up Josh, whom he called them for, using Gru's airship. As both ships take off to Earth, they suddenly crash into each other and land on Mars, now further away from Earth. However, the Minions hitch a ride back to Earth with an alien in his UFO, leaving Vector disappointed and in shock.
The short film was announced on November 2023 by Illumination around fan-favorite supervillain Vector with Jason Segel and Pierre Coffin (who penned and produced alongside Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri) respiring their respective roles.[4] This also marks Segel's return to Illumination in over 13 years since the first Despicable Me film.[importance?]
The score was provided by Orlando Pérez Rosso, who provided additional music to Jordan Peele's films Us (2019) and Nope (2022), with an official soundtrack released on January 5, 2024,[7] containing only four tracks and being one of the first Illumination shorts to have a soundtrack before Midnight Mission (another short film from the Despicable Me franchise, composed by Jessica Rose Weiss) was released on March 15, 2024,[8] and Fly Hard (a short film based on Migration, composed by Daniel Rojas) which also was released on March 14 on the same year,[9] one day before after the DVD release of Migration on February. "Papa Loves Mambo" sung by Perry Como was used in the credits.[citation needed]
Mooned was theatrically released alongside Migration on December 22, 2023 by Universal Pictures.[4]
