The Mat Offensive ( Albanian: Mat Ofensiv) was an offensive during the Albanian Civil War beetween the Legality Movement vs the National Anti-Fascist Liberation Movement on 9 July 1944.

Engagement

On July 9, 1944, the Mat District became the primary theater of an intensified campaign by the National Liberation Movement (LANÇ) to neutralize the Legality Movement's stronghold in north-central Albania. Seeking to secure the region, elements of the LANÇ 1st Shock Division, under the command of Mehmet Shehu, launched a concentrated offensive against Legality forces positioned at Fushë-Aliaj. The engagement involved an estimated 700-900 partisan troops tasked with breaching the defensive lines established by forces loyal to Abaz Kupi. Despite the tactical pressure applied by the 1st Shock Division, the Legality movement maintained its defensive positions during this specific offensive, which resulted in at least 21 reported casualties among the partisan ranks. This skirmish proved to be a critical point of friction in the broader Albanian Civil War, highlighting the strategic significance of the Mat-Dibër corridor as both factions vied for control before the final withdrawal of German forces.^[1]
